The Cimarron and Tall Timbers Railroad is a Sn3 representation of an imagineered Cimarron Division of the D&RGW railroad as it might have appeared in the 1950's. The layout is 17' x 22' and is comprised of 100% handlaid, code 70 rail on bass wood and white pine ties. The mainline is about 180' in length while the branch is about 150'. Motive power is primarily K-36 and 37 class locomotives, but a single K-28 is used for passenger service. Two smaller C class engines are also available for work train duties.

The layout features seven, scratch built wooden trestles. The largest is one of the prime scenes visitors see when entering the layout room. It spans Cimarron Canyon and crosses over the main line as it climbs the curving 2 1/2% grade. An imposing curving girder bridge is also visible at this room entrance.

Over the years, photos of the layout have appeared in regular articles and installments of the "Narrow Rails" column in the NMRA "Scale Rails" monthly publication. Several of the trestles and bridges, along with scale drawings, were also featured in Railroad Model Craftsman magazine articles. PBL FSS-II and PFM sound systems and throttles are used to control the trains.

The original models for two commercially available structures from Banta Modelworks are on the layout. The Cimarron Mine #1 is one of two major industries on the upper level branch line. The inspiration for the mine was an O scale model called the Rattlesnake Mine, which was designed and built by John Campbell. The other, the “Silver Plume House” designed by Tom, is based on the prototype structure that was in Silver Plume, Colorado.
